With snow coming, Saturday’s kids club event moved to Jan. 30
Into each life, some rain – and snow – must fall.
And with plenty of snow in the forecast for this weekend, we’re playing it safe and moving our Royer’s Kids Club event to Jan. 30.
If you already had reserved a spot at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., your registration automatically will move to Jan. 30. Only if you can’t join us on the new date do we ask you to call your local store to cancel your registration.
Otherwise, we look forward to kicking off the 2016 kids club schedule and making Valentine’s Day arrangements with you on Jan. 30.

Barnes & Noble, Midtown Scholar lending support for Royer’s annual children’s book drive
A couple of familiar names are helping us write a new chapter in the history of our annual children’s book drive.
Book stores Barnes & Noble and the The Midtown Scholar are lending their support to the 2015 edition of Bouquets for Books, which collects new children’s books for area public libraries.
The event runs Oct. 31-Nov. 7 in all of our stores.
BARNES & NOBLE
58 S. 32nd St., Camp Hill Shopping Center
Barnes & Noble will play host to a series of book fairs to benefit the library systems in Cumberland (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), Dauphin (Nov. 3-5) and York (Nov. 6-8) counties.
Customers will have an opportunity to designate their sales on those dates to the library systems, which will receive at least 10 percent of the sales during their book fairs.
What’s more, customers will be able to purchase books and donate them directly to Bouquets for Books. These donors will receive vouchers redeemable at any Royer’s (with proof of purchase) for a free bouquet.
Also in conjunction with the book fairs, Barnes & Noble and the library systems will hold free story times:
- Cumberland County, every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2, with cookies and a craft;
- Dauphin County, 11 a.m. Nov. 5, with cookies and coloring;
- York County, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 6, with cookies and coloring.
THE MIDTOWN SCHOLAR BOOKSTORE
1302 N. 3rd St., Harrisburg
The Midtown Scholar will have a Bouquets for Books display table at the front of its store, featuring some of the titles that appear on the Dauphin County Library System’s wish list. Through Nov. 7, these books are available at 10 percent off list price.
For more details about Bouquets for Books, including library wish lists, visit royers.com/bouquetsforbooks.
Kids club event Oct. 31 helps kick off book drive for public libraries
It’s boos and bouquets Oct. 31 when we kick off our annual children’s book drive with a kids club event.
Children ages 5 to 12 are asked to bring a new children’s book as the price of admission. Participants will get to make a fall arrangement (photo) and will receive a balloon.
Because the event coincides with Halloween, participants are encouraged to wear their trick-or-treat costumes.
Time slots are available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Registration is required by calling your nearest Royer’s store.
Royer’s “Bouquets for Books” book drive benefits area public libraries. Marking its 10th year in 2015, the event has collected nearly 14,000 books for the libraries.
Head of the class: photos from our back-to-school kids club event
Judging from these beautiful, smiling faces at Royer’s Kids Club’s back-to-school event on Aug. 22, these children are rested and ready for a challenging and rewarding new school year.
Thanks to all of the participants. We wish you the very best and encourage you to use every day as an opportunity to learn something new.
Meanwhile, we hope you’ll set aside time on Oct. 31 for our fifth and final kids club event of 2015. It’ll be Halloween, so be sure to wear your costume as we celebrate the holiday. It’s also the kick off our 10th annual “Bouquets for Books” children’s book drive to benefit area public libraries.
We look forward to seeing you then!
Sixth-grader Kaitlynn Balmer-Brown wins Royer’s Kids Club birthday card design contest
Kaitlynn Balmer-Brown has been dancing since age 3, studying jazz, tap and ballet. She also expresses herself through art, drawing graffiti-like designs on paper.
“She was good in art class,” said her stepmother, Emily Brown.
And she was plenty good enough to win the Royer’s Kids Club birthday card design contest.
The Lower Paxton Township sixth-grader’s drawing of a flower and balloons graces the electronic card that Royer’s Kids Club members will receive on their birthdays in the coming year. For Kaitlynn’s effort, she will receive a flower delivery on her next birthday.
The Royer’s Kids Club is free to ages 5 to 12. With parental permission, children may register for the kids club at any Royer’s store or online at www.royers.com/kidsclub.

Time slots are available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration is required by calling your nearest Royer’s store.
Kids club: books for families to read aloud together
As we noted in the June 2015 issue of the Royer’s Kids Club newsletter, Buds, it’s important to keep reading and learning even during summer vacation. Here’s an expanded version of a list of books that families can read aloud together that we touched on in Buds:
“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard and Florence Atwater
The unexpected delivery of a large crate containing an Antarctic penguin changes the life and fortunes of Mr. Popper, a house painter obsessed by dreams of the Polar regions.
“The End of the Beginning” by Avi
Avon the snail and Edward, a take-charge ant, set off together on a journey to an undetermined destination in search of unspecified adventures.
“The Penderwicks” by Jeanne Birdsall
While vacationing with their father in the Berkshire Mountains, four lovable sisters, ages four through twelve, share adventures with a local boy, much to the dismay of his snobbish mother.
“A Bear Called Paddington” by Michael Bond
A very small bear found by Mr. and Mrs. Brown at Paddington Station becomes a member of the family.
“The Mouse and the Motorcycle” by Beverly Cleary
A reckless young mouse named Ralph makes friends with a boy in room 215 of the Mountain View Inn and discovers the joys of motorcycling.
“My Father’s Dragon” by Ruth Stiles Gannett
A young boy runs away from home to rescue an abused baby dragon held captive to serve as a free 24-hour, seven-days-a-week ferry for the lazy wild animals living on Wild Island.
“The Year of Billy Miller” by Kevin Henkes
Seven-year-old Billy Miller starts second grade with a bump on his head and a lot of worries, but by the end of the year he has developed good relationships with his teacher, his little sister, and his parents and has learned many important lessons.
“Toys Go Out” by Emily Jenkins
Lumphy is a stuffed buffalo. StingRay is a stuffed stingray. And Plastic… well, Plastic isn’t quite sure what she is. They all belong to the Little Girl who lives on the high bed with the fluffy pillows. A very nice person to belong to.
“Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren
Annalina’s diary entries reflect her feelings and experiences as she goes from being afraid to go to kindergarten to loving it during her first month of school.
“Gooney Bird Greene” by Lois Lowry
A most unusual new student who loves to be the center of attention entertains her teacher and fellow second graders by telling absolutely true stories about herself, including how she got her name.
“Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle” by Betty MacDonald
From her upside-down house, the eccentric Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle issues to parents her marvelous cures for such common children’s diseases as Won’t-Put-Away-Toys-itis, Answerbackism, and Fighter-Quarrelitis.
“The World of Winnie-the-Pooh” by A.A. Milne
The world of Pooh is a world of enchantment. It is a world where Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga and the others share unforgettable adventures with Christopher Robin.
